Pilgrimage to Assisi: the places of St. Francis in Assisi

Start your visit to Assisi by the marvellous Basilica, divided into two sections, with unmissable frescoes by the Masters of Italian Art: Giotto and Cimabue. The upper basilica hosts meetings to which attend the exponents of all religious confessions; In the lower basilica you will visit the crypt with the relics of St. Francis.

The visit to the places of San Francesco, can continue with the Rocca Maggiore: Situated on the highest point of the village, ideal point to admire the enchantment of the surrounding countryside and the medieval plant, unchanged over the centuries, of Assisi. Continue with the Roman Amphitheatre and the Duomo, where Saint Francis and St. Clare received baptism.

Other fundamental stages of the pilgrimage to Assisi are: the Convent of S. Damiano, the Porziuncola in Santa Maria Degli Angeli, the Hermitage of the prisons, the sanctuary of the stripping and  Rivotorto. Spirituality, the sense of mystery and the indissoluble bond with the territory, is also breathed in the landscape that encompasses Assisi, in its woods and valleys where the saint used to retire to pray and meditate: Inspired by Umbria, he composed the famous ” Canticle of the creatures. ”

Recommended is the deviation along the paths of the park of the Mont Subasio, where comes the “pink stone” with which were erected hermitages, abbeys and churches of the district.

The “Way of St. Francis” is a pilgrimage that leads from Assisi to the Rieti Valley, another corner of central Italy closely connected with the terrestrial story of the saint. It is in fact in Greccio that in Christmas of 1223 St. Francis made the first living crib of history, recreating the atmosphere of the birth of Jesus, in a cave, in Bethlehem. In about 80 kilometres of this itinerary, you will visit:

1) The City of Rieti

2) The Sanctuary of Greccio

3) The sanctuaries of Poggio Bustone and Fonte Colombo

4) The Sanctuary of the Forest
